Force India's team manager has hit out at the standard of driving in last weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, slating both Felipe Massa
and Robert Kubica
for having collided with Vitantonio Liuzzi
and Adrian Sutil
respectively in Montreal, consigning the duo to just ninth and tenth places at the close.
Whilst on the face of it, the Silverstone-based squad's second double points-scoring result of F1 2010 appeared to be a positive outcome, having started respectively fifth and ninth, Liuzzi and Sutil had in truth hoped for better around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, making a welcome return to the sport's calendar following a year away. Unfortunately, some of their rivals had other ideas...
“Tonio was making ground on Jenson Button
at the start, but then [Felipe] Massa left him no room and pushed him onto the grass,” Andy Stevenson explained. “Then it looks as if Massa had another couple of bites at him. The car looks like a shark's attacked it – ridiculous...”
Off the back of a trying full-time comeback to the fray thus far in 2010, Liuzzi looked to have made a good step forward with his excellent third row grid slot in Canada – by far his best qualifying performance of the opening eight grands prix, and the product of a lot of work at the Force India
factory following the preceding outing in Istanbul and a return to the chassis he had used in the early races.
As it was, the Italian was left to produce a superb charge back through the field to P9 at the chequered flag, one position ahead of team-mate Sutil, who similarly found himself assaulted by the wayward, pit-lane bound Renault
of Robert Kubica, who was fortunate to escape with merely a reprimand.
“Adrian was having a great battle with Kubica who, for some unknown reason, wanted to fight with him even though we could see his guys out in the pit-lane and knew he was going to stop,” Stevenson revealed. “It was one of the most ridiculous moves I've ever seen. If it wasn't for Adrian's sharpness, that would have been a huge accident going into the last corner. It was crazy. It ruined Adrian's race and caused a puncture to the right rear.”
