Ecclestone: Red Bull deserve to win, I'd never have believed Webber form

Bernie Ecclestone tips Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel to secure the 2010 F1 title
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has said that Red Bull 'deserves to win' the 2010 F1 title and admitted his shock at the performances of Mark Webber.

After a difficult start to life in F1 after it purchased the Jaguar team, Red Bull has emerged as one of the main players in the sport in recent years, pushing Brawn GP all the way in the race for the title last season and becoming firmly embroiled in a battle with McLaren for the crown this time around.

Despite the increasingly frosty relationship between them, Webber and Sebastian Vettel have won five times this season to leave Red Bull with more victories than anyone else in 2010 and Ecclestone said he felt that way in which the team has turned its fortunes around was a sign that it deserved success.

“Red Bull bought a team that was no good,” he told City AM. “It's not like they bought Ferrari.”

As he has done on numerous occasions so far this season, Ecclestone tipped Vettel to end the year as champion, despite him sitting fourth in the championship standings – 24 points behind leader Lewis Hamilton.

The commercial rights holder did however admit he has been surprised with the performance of Vettel's team-mate Webber, who has won more races than anyone else this season.

“Mark has done a good job,” he said. “I would never have believed it at the beginning of the year if somebody had said he was going to do this.”
