Sebastian Vettel overturned the qualifying form book to deny Ferrari's Fernando Alonso by just 0.002secs and claim his sixth pole position of the season at Hockenheim.

Although Alonso had topped the previous two phases of the knock-out session, Vettel produced a blitzkrieg 1min 13.791secs lap to move to the head of the times, and then survived a late assault from the Spaniard, who eventually missed out by the narrowest of margins. With Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber struggling and failing to complete his final flying lap, Vettel was safe at the top of the table, with Felipe Massa fully half a second adrift of his Ferrari team-mate in third.

Webber survived to line-up on the outside of row two, while Jenson Button got the better of McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton by a tenth to snatch the inside of row three.

Robert Kubica finished the final ten-minute session in seventh, and will start ahead of Williams' Rubens Barrichello, who got the better of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg and Williams team-mate Nico Hulkenberg as the two Germans traded places throughout.
