Williams frustrated by Q3 performance

Both Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg believe they could have qualified higher for the German GP had it not been for a loss of performance in the final session.
Despite Williams getting both of its cars into the top ten in qualifying for the German Grand Prix, Rubens Barrichello couldn't help thinking that more was possible.

Although the Brazilian was good for a spot in the shoot-out throughout Q2, rookie team-mate Nico Hulkenberg squeezed in at the end of the 15-minute session, at the expense of national hero Michael Schumacher. The pair then went on to secure eighth and tenth respectively in the final grid line-up, but Barrichello was left to rue a change in the handling of his FW32.

"It was a good day all told but, in Q2, I set my best time and it was a fantastic lap, and then, in Q3, for some reason, I developed a bit of understeer and lost some balance," he reported, "It was a bit of a shame not to be able to repeat the performance, as I thought we were capable of P7. That said, we have to be happy with two cars in the top ten and it gives us confidence for good points tomorrow."

Williams has been on the up of late - indeed, new chairman Adam Parr believes that the team is developing as fast as anyone on the grid - and, at his home grand prix, Hulkenberg leant on his local knowledge to produce a third top ten qualifying performance of his rookie season.

Like Barrichello, the reigning GP2 Series champion felt that his car had more to offer in Q3, but was able to swap positions with Mercedes' Nico Rosberg before having to settle for the outside of row five.

"It was positive to get both cars into the top ten, and I think there was a bit more there time-wise at around about Rubens' pace, but I didn't have the greatest run right at the end of Q3," Hulkenberg reported, "All that said, we have a good platform for a strong race tomorrow."

Technical director Sam Michael confirmed that both drivers could have been a place better off, but insisted that the focus was already switching to race day.

"Today was another good qualifying performance by the team, and it is great to have both cars in the top ten," the Australian commented, "We believed we could get up to seventh, but we just missed a bit of time in the last sector relative to Q2. Looking to tomorrow's race, our target is to put away more points with both cars."
