Struggling F1 2010 newcomer Virgin Racing has reportedly entered into tentative negotiations with the manager of World Series by Renault star Esteban Guerrieri in the event that Timo Glock jumps ship at the end of the campaign as is being increasingly rumoured.

Glock has been persistently equivocal of late about his future plans, acknowledging that he is 'happy to stay' and honour his two-year contract with the Richard Branson-spearheaded outfit, but qualifying that by stressing he will remain so only 'if the team improves' [see separate story - click here].

Renault is known to be interested in attracting the young German's services to replace Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov alongside Robert Kubica next season, and the 28-year-old has confessed that after three rostrum finishes and five top six starts with Toyota in 2008 and 2009, he has not always found it easy relentlessly toiling around at the rear of the field this year.

"For someone like me who has won the GP2 title and been on the podium with Toyota several times, it is no secret that it is not easy to be at the back," he is quoted as having said by the news agency DPA, adding that his goal remains firmly fixed on one day conquering the drivers' crown in F1 as 'if I didn't think this, and did not do everything I can to make it a reality, then I would not belong in the premier class of motor racing'.

Should Glock indeed quit the team, then Guerrieri could be poised to replace him, with the 25-year-old having met with the Argentine interior minister as his country's government evaluates backing his F1 entry, much as it had been prepared to do with compatriot Jos? Mar?a L?pez at the now-defunct USF1 effort earlier this year. Reports emanating from his homeland claim the former columnist's manager Julio Gutierrez has also met Virgin team principal John Booth to discuss the possibility.

"It was a very good meeting," he affirmed, "and the [interior] minister has expressed his intention to collaborate so that Esteban can reach F1."

"I think the time is right to try," added Guerrieri himself. "I have an invitation from the Virgin team and we're working on it, because in principle to get one of their seats we need to have about $8 million. There should be developments within September, and the limit would be November."
