Button best in opening practice for Italian GP

F1 2009 world champion Jenson Button heads opening practice at Monza for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix on a 1m 23.693s.
McLaren's Jenson Button was fastest in opening practice this morning for this weekend's F1 2010 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Button posted the quickest time, a 1 minute 23.693 seconds, around 50 minutes into the one and a hour session, and that left him just 0.097 seconds up on Sebastian Vettel, who was 'best of the rest' for Red Bull Racing.

Lewis Hamilton, who is the current championship leader, was next up and third, the only other driver to break into the 1 minute 23 seconds, a promising start for McLaren.

After the top-three, Robert Kubica came in fourth for Renault, only a tenth or so further back, followed by Mercedes man Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber, who was more than half a second off the sister RB6 on a 1m 24.446s.

Vitantonio Liuzzi showed Force India could well be a real contender this weekend, as has been expected, and was seventh, while the Ferrari's of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa had to settle for eighth and ninth, not exactly the start the tifosi will have been hoping for.

Michael Schumacher rounded out the top ten. He was the first man to set a time this morning, not that it did him much good and he ended up more than a second off the pace and six tenths behind Rosberg in the other Mercedes GP W01.

Further down the order, Nico Hulkenberg and Force India tester, Paul di Resta were eleventh and twelfth, a few tenths up on Vitaly Petrov and Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi. Sauber's Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi came in 15th and 16th, with Jaime Alguersuari 17th.

Timo Glock was the best of the new team drivers, on a 1m 26.772s, followed by Jarno Trulli's Lotus and the other Virgin car of Lucas di Grassi. Heikki Kovalainen finished up behind them following more hydraulic problems with his T127.

Bruno Senna was 22nd for Hispania and ahead of Rubens Barrichello, who stopped out on the track early on when he lost drive. The Williams driver and F1 veteran completed just 4 laps. Sakon Yamamoto brought up the rear, more than a second off the other HRT car and 6.1 seconds off the ultimate pace.
