Virgin to test GP3 frontrunner Haryanto

Rio Haryanto to join F1 ranks at end of season, after impressing in GP3 Series.

Indonesian Rio Haryanto has earned himself a test drive in one of Virgin Racing's VR-01 F1 cars after impressing in the inaugural GP3 Series which joined the grand prix package this season.

The prize was offered courtesy of Virgin's links with the Manor Racing team, with the best-placed of the junior squad's drivers getting the chance to sample F1 power. Despite not having raced much in Europe prior to 2010, Haryanto came to the new series having dominated last year's Formula BMW Pacific Championship, where he took eleven wins, and showed that he had no problem in mixing it with the cream of racing's next generation as he took GP3 victory in Turkey, as well as finishing on the podium several times.

The 17-year old, who finished third in the penultimate race of the season, at Monza on Saturday evening, is expected to get his run at the end of the F1 campaign as the top flight tests young talent at Abu Dhabi. Confirmation of his 'prize' follows Virgin's F1 rival, Lotus, giving 16-year old Nabil Jeffri a run during aero tests at Duxford airfield in the UK.

at just 17, he's the youngest of the 30 drivers in the GP3 grid and very much underestimated at the beginning of the season. Yet now he's 5th in the final standings in his 1st season competing in Europe with a win and some podium finishes (with no prior knowledge of most of the circuits.) He's very humble and willing to learn from his mechanics and engineer. He shows respect towards his competitors, yet fearsome on track! go Rio! Just take it one step at a time... all 237 Million of us Indonesians are right behind you!!
