Maldonado keen to move up

Pastor Maldonado seeks to secure a 2011 F1 drive prior to the end of the current season
Pastor Maldonado has revealed that he is keen to secure an F1 drive for 2011 prior to the season finale in Abu Dhabi after successfully wrapping up the GP2 title at Monza.

The Venezuelan driver wrapped up the crown despite failing to finish either race in Italy after closest rival Sergio Perez failed to secure the points needed to keep the title fight alive into the season finale in Abu Dhabi in November.

Maldonado has been linked to a possible drive with Sauber, although the announcement this morning that Nick Heidfeld will rejoin the team for the final five rounds of 2010 could throw a spanner in the works.

However, Maldonado says he is keen to secure a place on the grid for next year and doesn't want to simply be a one-season wonder.

"I don't want to get to Formula One and be there for just one season," he was quoted by the O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. "It is an historic moment. Not for many years have we had a representative in Formula One, but there is a boom of interest now.

"The project of our government to support sport is a success. They have invested six years in me to get to Formula One and I am ready for the challenge."

Maldonado insisted he is keen to secure his seat prior to the final round of the year in order to give him the chance to take part in the F1 test that will follow the Abu Dhabi event.

"It would be great if it was done before the race in Abu Dhabi,” he said, “so I could participate in the tests there after the GP with my new team."

Johnny Cecotto was the last Venezuelan to compete in F1.

Pastor needs to spend additional time in the 'bumper-cars' at the local fairs & carnivals ... to perfect his technique. I doubt seriously any F1 team is considering letting him even TEST in one of its cars. He may want to consider NASCAR... the driving form and vehicle design fits his style and (limited) ability.
