Senna in 'well-advanced' to join Lotus in 2011

A familiar F1 combination could be set to re-appear next year, it is being speculated, with rumours that Hispania Racing rookie Bruno Senna is poised to jump ship to a Renault-powered Lotus outfit...
Recent speculation in his homeland is claiming that F1 2010 rookie Bruno Senna is in 'well-advanced' discussions to move from backmarker Hispania Racing (HRT) to leading newcomer Lotus next year – at the expense, it would seem, of ultra-experienced grand prix veteran Jarno Trulli.

Senna has struggled this season with the woefully uncompetitive Hispania F110, regularly qualifying right at the back of the grid and not even coming close to threatening the points on race day – but with the paddock recognising that his difficulties have been down to the car rather than any fault of the driver, it seems the former GP2 Series runner-up has attracted interest from other teams.

According to Brazilian publication Globo Esporte, the recently-turned 27-year-old is 'close to getting something better' and in 'well-advanced' talks to join Anglo/Malaysian operation Lotus for next year, with any deal contingent upon the agreement of Senna's sponsors – and Trulli tipped to be the driver to make way.

Neither the Italian nor current team-mate Heikki Kovalainen has yet been confirmed for a second season at the team, whilst Senna's fellow HRT ace Karun Chandhok – who was dropped in favour of pay-driver Sakon Yamamoto during the summer, and has not raced since – has similarly been linked with the Tony Fernandes-led outfit in a testing capacity [see separate story – click here].

With the long-awaited announcement that Lotus is to benefit from Renault engines in 2011 finally expected to be made over the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix weekend at Interlagos, should Bruno similarly come on-board, it would recreate the iconic Senna/Lotus/Renault combination of the mid-1980s.

In 1985, Senna's uncle Ayrton claimed his maiden grand prix victory at the wheel of the Renault-powered Lotus 97T in the teeming rain at Estoril, and over that season and the next, the legendary triple F1 World Champion notched up a further three triumphs, ten more podium finishes and an incredible 15 pole positions.
