Pits development christened 'Silverstone Wing'

The new pit and paddock development at Silverstone has been christened with an historically-significant title ahead of 2011 British GP.
The British Racing Drivers' Club has revealed that the iconic new pit, paddock and conference building at the self-styled 'Home of British Motor Racing' is to be known as 'The Silverstone Wing', a title that ties in with several of the venue's historical themes.

As well as being a term synonymous with motorsport, the 'wing' theme - which resulted from a competition inviting members of the public to name the new building, and which generated more than 4000 entries - also connects with Silverstone's aviation history.

“'The Silverstone Wing' is a highly appropriate name," Richard Phillips, managing director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, agreed, "'Flight' and 'velocity' were key themes incorporated into the design brief, and the streamlined form of the new building conjures up the impression of speed, dynamic motion and the grace of a bird's wing in full flight.

“Many of the competition entrants suggested names that included the word 'wing', or related to types of birds. After careful deliberation by the Silverstone team, the entries were whittled down to just 20 names, which were then presented to the BRDC board for discussion at the November board meeting.”

Indeed, 'The Wing' was submitted by ten members of the public as a potential name for the new building. Originally, entrants coming up with the best suggestion were to be entered into a draw, with one lucky winner walking away with a prize package, but the circuit has since decided to reward each of the ten entrants who championed 'The Wing' with a 'money-can't-buy' VIP invitation for two to attend the official opening of 'The Silverstone Wing' in May 2011, as well as race day hospitality for two at the 2011 British Grand Prix and British Motorcycle Grand Prix, as well as a Silverstone Super Choice Voucher allowing them to choose from six of Silverstone's most popular driving experiences.

While development of the circuit's infrastructure continues apace, Silverstone has warned that tickets for its new grandstands are already selling fast ahead of the 2011 British Grand Prix

Racegoers have been quick to purchase tickets in the new International Pits Straight grandstand, with all 4500 tickets already sold out, while the new grandstand at Abbey is also proving popular as, from 2011, the corner becomes the opening turn. Only a limited number of seats are still available in the grandstand overlooking the crucial first corner and new start-finish straight.

The grandstands at Club and Becketts have also been improved for 2011, when Club becomes the final corner on the circuit. A covered grandstand - in a new, elevated position - will provide views of the start-finish straight, as well as the pit-lane entry and the pit-lane itself. It is also the prime location to watch the drivers celebrating on the podium after the race.

The repositioned and elevated grandstand at Becketts was a revelation in 2010, with improved site-lines providing fantastic views of Maggotts Curve, through Becketts, and down to Stowe, as well as overlooking the new section of circuit through Farm Curve, Village and Aintree. In 2011, however, Becketts will be a covered grandstand.

I don’t know if it’s true or not but I have read somewhere that Silverstone is in a big mess financially by overspending and building a new complex on water table, there was even some talk (rumours) about BE acquiring the place.
