Prost: Engine deal better for Renault

Alain Prost says it works better for Renault to only be an engine supplier in F1
Alain Prost says Renault's decision to focus solely on its role of engine supplier in F1 is no bad move, despite earlier saying he was disappointed by the decision to sell its stake in the team carrying the Renault name.

Renault elected to sell its stake in the Enstone-based squad to Genii Capital in a move which then allowed Lotus to become involved with the programme, with Prost lamenting the fact that it reduced French involvement in the sport still further – with no French GP and no French drivers on the grid [See separate story HERE].

However, Prost now insists that the decision to form Renault Sport F1 and simply supply engines could be a wise move by the manufacturer as it will allow Renault to focus fully on one element and not worry about multiple factors.

"As the owner of a team it's always a bit complicated because you have to manage many things at once," he told Auto Hebdo. "With just the engine (supply), you can always offload your responsibilities to the chassis, especially since the latter is the most important for the performance in F1.

"There is always a little war between the car side and the engine side. But if you're doing the chassis and the engine, it's always more difficult when you lose."

Prost added that he felt it was beneficial to Renault to develop an engine to the new rules that will come into play in 2013 as the technology used could work its way down to the road car market.

"For a manufacturer like Renault, it is a big plus,” he said. "In terms of technology, F1 is going to be closer to what is happening in road cars, including the reduction in engine size - which is called downsizing - with turbocharging.

"It's an aspect that is very positive for Renault."

As a former team owner, he understands why Renault made that move but it still saddens him from a French motorsport perspective. Not that hard to get, really. Oh, and of course Enstone is in Oxfordshire but at the height of Renault's involvement in its official outfit, there was a lot of interaction between Enstone and Guyancourt on many levels. It's not just providing the engine, the cash and the sticker et voila !
