Vettel to drive for us 'sooner or later', says Montezemolo

Ferrari target Sebastian Vettel, keen to pair the German with Fernando Alonso in 2012?

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said that the Scuderia would love to sign Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel, who became the youngest F1 champion in the history of the sport this year, is contracted to Red Bull until 2011 and the Milton Keynes-based outfit also has an option on the German for 2012. However it would appear that the 23-year-old is very much on Ferrari's radar.

“Sebastian is fast, intelligent and young,” Montezemolo told Express. “He will drive a red car sooner or later.”

Indeed it is understood Ferrari is keen to pair Sebastian Vettel with Fernando Alonso in 2012, a potentially formidable line-up, although hardly likely to be the most harmonious.

The Cologne 'paper also adds that Ferrari recently tried to poach Red Bull's design guru, Adrian Newey. Newey allegedly rejected the offer.

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz meanwhile admitted recently that the Milton Keynes-based outfit may struggle to keep Vettel in the long term.

"[If the car was not competitive], we would let him go even if he had a contract," Mateschitz told Welt am Sonntag last month.

"Seb wants to drive for Ferrari some day. [But] we will make it as difficult a decision for him as possible."

37.5 cent (your stock is risig a bit!). i still disagree with your comment that every young german driver wants to drive for bmw or merc. first of all, bmw were not in f1 long enough for anyone to aspire to the team. secondly, apart from early 50s, merc could not have been an aspiration either, as they werent in f1, until they bought their way back lat year. so how could any youngster have an ambition to drive for bmw or merc, when it would mean NOT being in f1. even when merc were competing, the germans still wanted to drive for ferrari. and so it will continue, until merc pull their finger out and produce a dominant car for a number of seasons.
prosit, enjoy the rest of christmas!
