Ferrari poised to agree new Marlboro deal

Ferrari still 'addicted' to Marlboro cigarette money?

Scuderia Ferrari looks set to extend its sponsorship deal with Marlboro until the end of 2014.

The current agreement, which began in 1997 and which has continued despite the ban on tobacco advertising, is due to finish at the end of 2011. However there are reports now that an extension could be in place by the end of this month, ahead of the launch of the outfit's 2011 challenger next Friday, January 28, at its base in Maranello.

“We do not see any obstacles stopping us extending it,” a spokesperson for Philip Morris International told Motorsport-Total.com.

“Our relationship with Ferrari is a genuine partnership and over 20 years there has been constant, mutual support grown through moments of joy and failure, doubt and certainness.”

A spokesperson for Ferrari meanwhile seemed equally confident, even though the team had to drop its barcode livery last year as it was deemed a form of subliminal advertising.

“The current agreement will expire at the end of this year,” the Scuderia told ESPNF1.com.

“There is not yet any agreement for the future years but there are all the conditions to sign a new one.”

@anon 1, shhhh they might hear you!!! i still don't understand the loss of the barcode from both Ferrari and the Ducati MotoGP squad. It's not really subliminal advertising, it's stupid. I also agree they loss of these big money sponsors is having a negative affect on F1 and MotoGP. Marlboro, Gauloises, Camel, B&H, West, Mild Seven, Fortuna and the rest have either gone or soon to be gone! Loads of teams are recognised for these sponsors as well, especially in the 2 wheel paddock: Gauloises Yamaha, Camel Yamaha, Marlboro Ducati etc. etc.
