Reigning FIA Formula Two Champion Dean Stoneman has been forced to withdraw from the 2011 World Series by Renault campaign after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Stoneman tested with Williams F1 in the special FIA young driver test in Abu Dhabi last November as his prize for clinching the Formula Two crown – impressing by lapping fifth-quickest for the Grove-based outfit at Yas Marina – and he has been tipped for a bright future in the sport.

The 20-year-old had subsequently intended to compete in the World Series this year, but has now put his racing career on-hold as he battles the illness.

'Dean will concentrate his complete attention on returning to full health after being diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this week,' read a statement on his official website. 'Specialists have made the diagnosis early and are confident that he will make a full recovery, with treatment scheduled to begin with immediate effect.

'As on the track, Dean is determined to beat the illness and is already looking at sporting heroes like Lance Armstrong for inspiration in a bid to get back on-track as soon as possible. The Stoneman family have requested that their privacy be respected at this time.'

All of us here at Crash.net wish Dean a full and speedy recovery and return to competition.

I hope that Dean will take inspiration from Lance Armstrong. It can be beaten and I hope that with strength and purpose of mind Dean will overcome the hardships that he may have to endure and return to the sport in which he excels. Be Strong. Live Strong.
