Petrov first to sample new Renault

Renault confirms Vitaly Petrov will sample the new R31 before Robert Kubica in Spain next week
The Lotus Renault GP team has confirmed that Vitaly Petrov will be the first driver to sample the new R31 when it makes its track debut in testing at Valencia next week.

The team will launch its 2011 car at the Spanish circuit on Monday ahead of the opening three-day test of the year, with Petrov set to drive the car for the first day of running on Tuesday.

Team-mate Robert Kubica will then take over for the remaining two days of the test, with the pair then spending two days each at the wheel through the following tests at Jerez, Catalunya and Bahrain.

While the car has yet to appear in public, the team revealed the black and gold livery it will use for 2011 during the recent Autosport International show at Birmingham's NEC.

I am fairly convinced that's a really clever option from LRGP to give a chance to Vitaly as this "privilege" should boost his confidence and make him feel more settled within the team. Knowing Qbee I really doubt he can be disappointed... Also let’s be honest - the track will be totally green that day and also fog/drizzle/rain is expected so not really much can be done apart from sorting out system checks and eliminating potential glitches before going for real testing over following sessions. I would compare this day to an installation lap that drivers do on the first free practice sessions during GP’s just to have a look if everything is in place before working on evaluations and set-up changes etc... At least in my view it’s a really good choice!
