Aleshin happy to wait for F1 chance

28 January 2011

Mikhail Aleshin says he is happy to wait for the chance to move into Formula 1 after confirming a deal to compete in GP2 for the 2011 season.

The Russian clinched the World Series by Renault crown last year and tested for Renault in the Abu Dhabi Young Driver session as a result, making a good impression on the team in the process.

The 23-year-old had hoped to secure a role in F1 this season before being hampered by funding issues and has now agreed a deal to compete with Carlin in GP2 this year – the same team that carried him to the World Series crown last year.

Running on the same bill as the F1 teams, Aleshin will now hope to put himself firmly in the shop window for 2012 when he will aim to join countryman Vitaly Petrov on the F1 grid.

“My move to Formula 1 is delayed, but I have no regrets about competing in GP2,” he told R-Sport. “I'll have a new car and a new team [in GP2 terms]. I've already set behind its wheel, but it's going to be all different next season. It's a big challenge for me. But not everything is lost; we'll fight for Formula 1 in 2012.”
