F1 hopeful Jules Bianchi hits out at the restrictive testing rules currently in place
Jules Bianchi has hit out at the restrictive testing rules that will limit his chances of sampling Ferrari's new F150 but admitted that he still feels he is in the best place to learn about F1.

The Frenchman will act as test and reserve driver for the team this season but a limit on testing means he is unlikely to spend much time behind the wheel of the new car as Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa are given maximum track time ahead of the opening round of the year in Bahrain.

However, while he admits that the restrictive nature of the rules isn't good for young drivers looking to make the step up to F1, Bianchi insists that the opportunities afforded to him at Ferrari will be an advantage compared to if he was to take on a role elsewhere.

"Definitely for young drivers it doesn't help," he told Reuters. "Fortunately I'm at Ferrari and it's the best place to learn. I'm able to test older cars like from two years ago and that's good experience."

Bianchi's views were echoed by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo - who has long pushed for F1 teams to be allowed to run a third car for young drivers – with the president also tipping Bianchi to make it onto the grid in the coming years.

"I hope the next Ferrari driver is a driver from the drivers' academy because this will mean they are a top star," he said. "[However] the rules on testing are absurd ... and do nothing for young drivers."

Alongside his Ferrari role, Bianchi will return to GP2 this season and aim to improve on his third place last year.

He is right! The test driver role is more of a token than anything today, there is hardly any opportunity for the test driver to actually do any testing, which makes the role redundant.

I think the good compromise would be to do scheduled testing sessions after some of the GPs like it was once hinted. But I don't think the unlimited amount of testing will ever return. At that time, it was even the opposite absurdity when teams were scratching tarmac endlessly just in case they found something.
