Hamilton pleased with seasonal debut

Lewis Hamilton happy with his first day's work on track in F1 2011
Lewis Hamilton said he was happy with his first day of running back behind the wheel of an F1 car after taking over McLaren's programme for the second day of testing in Valencia.

Hamilton continued the programme started by test driver Gary Paffett on Tuesday as the team worked on gathering data on the new Pirelli tyres using a development version of last year's MP4-25.

While the Briton admitted it was difficult to replicate the downforce levels expected for the new season using the old car, he was still happy with the work done with the Pirelli rubber on what will be his only day of running this week as he posted the fourth fastest time.

Jenson Button will complete McLaren's programme on track tomorrow.

“It felt great to be back in the car,” Hamilton said. “I haven't been driving for a while, so it felt good to brush away the cobwebs, and I felt at home straight away.

“Even though we were using the 2010 car, we had quite a productive day. We were trying to replicate 2011 downforce levels on the old car – so it wasn't 100 per cent accurate – but we still got a good understanding of the new Pirellis and covered quite a lot of ground.

“The new tyres are easy to get a feel for; there's not as much grip on the Pirellis as we had last year; they drop off quite a bit, too, and they're a little bit harder to control over a longer stint – but it's the same for everybody.”

4th time with the 2010 car? His first day while it was the second for Alonso or Vettel? What else is to say. Hamilton is awesome and if McLaren delivers a car that's at the same level as Red Bull and Ferrari--which they failed to do last year--we'll have ourselves a VERY serious candidate for the title. The only other driver that equals Lewis's talent in the current grid is Alonso. I'm not saying Vettel isn't very talented, but he's got a lot to polish. His title last year wasn't more deserved than Button's in 2009: way better car than the rest.

Fiddy, Would love to have some good discussions without the constant slagging down of the drivers...regardless who they are.... But then again might be on the wrong site for that.. :)
