Button predicts fun with Pirelli rubber

Jenson Button predicts excitement from the new Pirelli tyres in F1 2011
Jenson Button has predicted a fun season in F1 thanks to the new Pirelli tyres after sampling the rubber on his new McLaren MP4-26 for the first time in Jerez.

Button took over at the wheel of the car from team-mate Lewis Hamilton and started the day running a series of checks as he became comfortable in his new surroundings.

The Briton then worked on set-up and tyre evaluation during the afternoon and he admitted that the differences in tyre compound would make things interesting on track during the year ahead.

“We've tried the different Pirelli tyres and there are big differences across the compound range; not only in terms of laptime, but also with degradation and durability,” he said. “It's going to be fun for racing, I think, and it's what everyone wanted. The TV viewers will certainly know the differences between the tyres.”

Button was also able to sample the KERS system for the first time and with a solid day behind him, will now aim to push harder when he returns to action on Sunday.

“The morning was spent getting me satisfactorily fitted in the car, adapting to the hybrid – which is new to me – and getting used to how the system works,” he said. “I like the power boost it gives you.

“I felt a lot more comfortable with the car at the end of the day after we'd played around with a few things in the cockpit. We've made some good progress.

“It's been a good first day. On Sunday, I hope we can start to have a crack at seeing what the car really has in it.”
