The final F1 2011 pre-season test could be shifted to Barcelona in the wake of civil unrest in Bahrain.

The Circuit de Catalunya will host the third group test of the year this week, running from February 18-21. The teams had then been due to head to the Middle East to run at the Bahrain International Circuit from March 3-6, ahead of the season opener the following weekend.

However given the situation in the region, the GP2 Series Asia race there this weekend had to be aborted in the interests of safety, and there is speculation the F1 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix will also suffer the same fate [see separate story - click here], it appears a contingency plan is in the offing, at least in terms of the final four-day test.

"FOTA [the Formula One Teams Assocation] has asked us what dates we have available at the prospect of being unable to go to the last test [in Bahrain], but there is no formal request yet," Vicenc Aguilera, the new president of the Circuit de Catalunya told Spanish newspaper, El Pais.

He added that while the track is unavailable on certain dates over the next few weeks, he was sure something could be worked out: "If F1 asks us something, we will do our best to please," he confirmed.
