Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has been asked to lead Rome's bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games according to the head of the Italian Games Committee.

Di Montezemolo, who had been linked to a move into politics over the off-season, has previous experience of organising large sporting events having been the man behind the football World Cup back in 1990.

Rome is set to go up against rivals from Dubai and Japan as it seeks to secure the Olympic Games, with a decision due to be taken in 2013.

"Luca di Montezemolo is the right man, one of the most famous Italians in the world, Gianni Petrucci was quoted by ANSA. "With him our chances would increase," CONI president Gianni Petrucci told ANSA news service.

"I'm in complete agreement with the government and the Rome council. I really hope the Ferrari president's reply is positive."

Di Montezemolo is expected to give a reply next week on whether he will take up the role.
