Michael Schumacher has said his initial impressions of the upgrade package Mercedes have brought to Barcelona for the final F1 2011 pre-season test this week are 'certainly positive'.

His comments echo those made by his team-mate Nico Rosberg, who was in action at the Circuit de Catalunya yesterday [see separate story - click here]. Indeed while Schumacher only ended up with the fifth fastest time today, a 1 minute 22.892 seconds, he did manage a good amount of laps - 89 in total, equal to 414 kilometres.

The German spent the morning completing set-up work with longer runs towards the end, just prior to lunch. Then in the afternoon he switched to doing shorter runs, focusing on data collection in preparation for the final two days of the test.

"We've had a very productive day and completed a reasonable amount of mileage," Schumacher said. "We were able to check and confirm a lot of things on the set-up of the car with the new upgrade package, and my initial impressions are certainly positive.

"We've worked hard on reliability at the previous tests and our priority now is to develop and fine-tune the car which we have done quite successfully today."

Schumacher will now continue the team's programme on Friday, before Rosberg concludes proceedings on Saturday.
