Webber chasing best yet in Melbourne

Mark Webber targets a strong start to the new F1 season in Melbourne next weekend
Mark Webber says his target is on securing his best result to date in the Australian Grand Prix when the F1 season gets underway with his home event next weekend.

The Albert Park race hasn't been kind to the Red Bull Racing driver in the past, with a brace of fifth place finishes the best the Australian has managed since making his debut in the sport back in 2002 with Minardi.

Webber's best result in Melbourne with his current team was ninth last season – the first time he had scored on home soil in Red Bull colours – but he goes into the new campaign on the back of a strong pre-season for the defending champions and will now seek to start his championship bid in style.

However, the 34-year-old admits that the new Pirelli tyres and the unpredictable nature of the Melbourne weather is likely to make it an interesting weekend on track.

“As an Australian I'm looking forward to Melbourne being the first race,” he said. “We've done a huge amount of testing and a lot of work has gone into the cars - now we'll put them through their paces at Albert Park and lots of questions will be answered. It's going to be an eventful weekend, especially as the weather can be a bit hit and miss. We'll learn a lot about the tyres, which will play a key role.

“I hope I can improve my luck there, as it hasn't been incredible since since my first GP in '02. I hope to get my best result and there's every indication we can do that. This is the best winter we've had - let's hope we can carry it on into this event.”
