Former F1 World Champion Jenson Button made history when he drove McLaren's 2008-spec MP4-23 around Bathurst's legendary Mount Panorama Circuit - see all the pictures right here!
McLaren-Mercedes ace Jenson Button made history this week when he became the first driver ever to lap the legendary Bathurst circuit in Australia at the wheel of an F1 car ahead of this weekend's Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Driving a 2008-spec MP4-23, the 2009 F1 World Champion set a new unofficial lap record around the four-mile Mount Panorama Circuit in New South Wales – some 20 seconds quicker than had ever been achieved previously – before proceeding to swap cars with multiple V8 Supercar Champion and five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes.

You can find out just what the British star made of the whole experience right here, whilst to see a full picture gallery from the event, click here

I would like to have been there. Having been to Bathurst 5 times it's an awesome track and seeing an F1 car on full song would be spectacular. I can highly recommend the Bathurst race to any petrol head. It's brilliant racing and you can get close to the action, into the pits, meet the drivers, etc. Very well organized and an experience that every motor sport fan should experience if given the chance. I'll be there again this year.

The last time an F1 car went around Bathurst was in the 70s. I'll strain the memory cells and say it was Vern Schuppen, whom participated in 13 F1 World Championship Grands Prix and many other international racing series.
