Berger calls for simpler F1 rules

Gerhard Berger says F1 shouldn't worry about difficult technical problems to a lack of overtaking and should take a simpler approach
Former F1 racer Gerhard Berger has called for the sport to adopt a 'simpler' approach when it comes to solving the issue of overtaking, rather than adopt a series of systems which make it more difficult for fans to understand what they are seeing on track.

The season opener in Melbourne saw the return of KERS and the introduction of a moveable rear wing in an effort to improve overtaking, although the DRS system failed to have the desired effect – albeit on a circuit that wasn't expected to be well suited to its usage.

Berger however insisted that he didn't want to see the sport focus so much on technology to solve the current problems of overtaking, and insisted that the way in which the title fight panned out last year suggested there wasn't as much wrong as some may feel.

“This is the wrong approach," he was quoted as telling the Austrian station Servus TV. "I want to see racing, where if you want to get past, you have to brake later. The audience does not want to be completely overwhelmed [by complicated systems] but rather see very simple rules and racing, the same for Formula One as with football.

"I don't even know why we always have to talk about overtaking. Everyone seems to complain but in recent years, the World Championships have been very interesting.

"In most cases it is decided at the last race, last year there were four drivers in with a chance. And there has been overtaking.”

Aerodynamics from massive wings cause the turbulence which prevents overtaking.Solution?...drastically reduce the size of these "barn doors" and rely more on mechanical grip. That way we could have exiting racing and it would be wonderful to see cars "drifting " once again.

Removing wings wont solve the problem. Assume that all the aero parts are removed... what will happen? Well qualifying will set the fastest cars at the front and aside from the start where its possible for someone to make a faster start, the faster cars move to the front the slower cars fall behind... How do you expect passing to happen? It wont because all the cars are so equal that no cars truly dominate in any one area, be it braking,acceleration or grip... they all use the same tires they all weight the same amount... In a spec series you only see overtaking because of shuffled orders at the start or because some drivers are just inconsistent as hell. You don't see as many drivers in F1 having brain farts so their is less chance for a driver to take advantage of mistakes. Sorry but the only way to make the racing more entertaining is to open the rules on the cars and let the builders go wild... allow unlimited testing so cars could change more during the season... and allow AN
