Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner has said the revisions being made to Silverstone will help to put the venue 'up there with the best circuits in the world'.
Horner paid a visit to the circuit earlier this week to tour the new 'Silverstone Wing' – the paddock and pit complex currently being worked on ahead of its official opening on 17 May.
The complex, which will be used for this season's British Grand Prix, is set to provide provide a world-class facility for teams, officials and spectators alike, including 41 garages, a race control building, a podium, media centre, hospitality and VIP spectator zones.
“I think it's fantastic - it puts Silverstone right up there with the best circuits in the world,” he said. “It's quite staggering the scale of what's been built here in a very short space of time, but it gives the circuit a whole new feel and dimension. The investment in The Wing is phenomenal. I think it's great for British motor sport and makes Silverstone a first class facility.
“The track is one of the last remaining serious challenges on the Grand Prix circuit; Silverstone, Spa, Suzuka, they are all circuits that the drivers revel in. With the facilities that have now been put in place, Silverstone will be comparable with any Formula 1 facility in the world. It's going to be fantastic to come here in July when it will all be up and running.”
Richard Phillips, managing director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, said he couldn't wait to see the new complex make its debut in F1 later in the year.
“The Silverstone Wing signifies an exciting new era for the venue and takes us another step closer to becoming the world's leading motor sport venue. In addition to having one of the fastest and most challenging circuits on the F1 calendar, we now have an iconic pit complex that we can all be immensely proud of.
“We appreciate Christian taking time out of his busy schedule to come and see The Wing today – he has been very positive about the new facility. A long term Formula 1 contract has enabled us to push on with the development of this pioneering building and we can't wait to see it in full use at the British Grand Prix in July.”
