New officers at FOTA

There has been a change of personnel at the head of F1 teams' body FOTA, with Aldo Costa and Eric Boullier taking on significant roles.
The Formula One Teams Association will have a different look to its executive committee in 2011 after Eric Boullier and Aldo Costa were voted into prominent positions at Sepang.

The first FOTA meeting of the season saw Lotus Renault GP team principal Boullier voted in as vice-chairman, while Ferrari technical director Costa takes over the chair of the Technical Regulations Working Group. McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh remains as FOTA chairman, while Red Bull's Christian Horner will continue his role as chairman of the Sporting Regulations Working Group. Stefano Domenicali and Ross Brawn make way for Boullier and Costa after serving in 2010.

The meeting also reflected on results achieved in 2010, particularly those which represent platforms upon which the group hope it will be possible to progress in 2011. The various FOTA teams have all confirmed that they are keen to continue working together, with the sport's other stakeholders, to further increase the global reach of F1, using the results of the extensive fan survey carried out in association with F1 Racing magazine, LG Electronics and IFM Sports Marketing Surveys.

The indications, gathered from more than 85,000 fans from all over the world, provided a useful set of information, while last July's Fans Forum in London, which featured representatives from five teams, was widely heralded as the first occasion where fans have had the opportunity of addressing their questions directly to the participants.

FOTA has been, and will continue to be, active on targeting environmentally relevant technologies and strategies. In June 2010, FOTA carried out a comprehensive programme, externally audited by the international environmental research analysis organisation, Trucost plc, monitoring the carbon emissions imputable to the F1 teams and defining a reduction path until 2012 with the objective of creating a positive and environment-friendly image for all teams and for F1 as a whole.

In 2010, FOTA actively supported the teams throughout the entire process that led to the selection of Pirelli as the new tyre supplier from 2011 onward. The technical collaboration with Pirelli will continue during the course of the season in order to further enhance the driving challenge.

FOTA is also extremely active in the monitoring and controlling of the costs associated to F1 racing. On the one hand, it has made possible the definition and implementation of the Resource Restriction Agreement, which, for the first time ever in the history of the sport, has seen the teams sharing information about their costs and defining a pattern for the reduction of their overall expenditures. On the other hand, FOTA, also thanks to the collaboration of CMEFE (aerodynamics department of the Haute École du Paysage, d'Ingénierie et d'Architecture in Geneva), is verifying the expenditures and methodologies applied in CFD and wind tunnels R&D, auditing the procedures of each team.

The successful collaboration among the teams, together with a positive engagement with the other stakeholders, namely the FIA and FOM, shows how important results can be achieved for the development of F1.

No matter what they say, being head of FOTA will always detract some attention from their team job. Given their team job is team principal, that has an effect on the team. The FOTA position should definitely circulate with all members HAVING to assume the position at some stage.

Calvin, I somewhat agree with you. But not every driver signs up for the GPDA. Secondly, this FOTA group is going to be responsible for the new Concorde Agreement. FOTA wants to dictate the rules to the FIA and not the other way around as we currently have. Still trying to get rid of the Max era. This group is going to have a more important function with F1. more than any other FOTA type group in the history of the sport. Ferrari has already stated that if the govenance of the sport doesn't change they will leave. They are talking about the function of the FIA with F1. I.E. forcing 4cyl turbos down the teams neck.
