Kubica goes home

Robert Kubica goes home three months on from his awful rally crash

Renault F1 pilot Robert Kubica has been discharged from Santa Corona hospital, it has been announced.

The Pole had been in the Italian hospital since the rally crash back in February that left him with multiple injuries after an armco barrier penetrated the cockpit of his Skoda Fabia S2000.

“Robert Kubica is no longer at Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure,” confirmed a statement to the media. “His condition is good and the driver will be able to begin a new rehabilitation phase outside the hospital.

“He will carry on being monitored by the Santa Corona doctors who had him in their care through scheduled appointments.”

At the end of last week Kubica said his recovery was going in the 'right direction' [see separate story - click here] and while he still only has limited use of the hand injured in the accident, such limited mobility is normal at this stage of his recovery.

Kubica's doctor, Dr Riccardo Ceccarelli however, has warned that it is still too early to say whether or not the 26-year-old will be able to return to racing.

“We'll understand six months after the accident: we need to wait for nature to run its course even though, knowing Robert, we are confident in his recovery strength,” he told Italian newspaper, Gazzetta dello Sport. “Rebuilding the nerves in the hand is the longest process, so it's difficult to understand in the first four months what the recovery will be like.

“He has good sensitivity, but not in every spot. The hand is there [though], and should regain good functionality.”

It is now understood Kubica will have a short period of rest at his Monaco home, before moving to Dr. Ceccarelli's facilities in Italy where he is due to start a 'deep rehabilitation programme'.
