Williams: We are improving

23 May 2011

Williams technical director Sam Michael insists that the team is continuing to improve despite failing to score again in the Spanish Grand Prix.

Pastor Maldonado managed to break into the top ten during qualifying but then lost places at the start and also in his second stop when he was delayed by a sticking rear jack.

Having elected to run a four-stop strategy, the Venezuelan had to settle for 15th place which was still two places ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello who suffered from KERS and tyre wear problems throughout the race.

Despite the fact that the team has now gone five races without a top ten finish, Michael said there was improvements being made, with the close nature of the midfield meaning the improvements hadn't yet been turned into results.

“Although our end positions don't look like it, we are improving but it is extremely tight in the midfield,” he said. “If you don't get it right, you end up 15th instead of tenth. The main thing for us now is to keep focussed and to improve the upgrades we bring to the car.

“Over the next couple of races in particular we need to get the front and rear wings and the diffuser working. Today we had a problem with the rear jack on both cars so we will look into that before Monaco.”
