Vettel tops final practice

Sebastian Vettel on top in the final practice session for the European Grand Prix
Sebastian Vettel posted the quickest time in final practice for the European Grand Prix, with Red Bull and Ferrari proving to be the teams to beat in the final session before qualifying in Valencia.

The German left it until the closing stages of the hour long session before putting himself at the head of the times, with a lap of 1min 37.258s on the softer Pirelli rubber putting him half a second clear of Fernando Alonso's Ferrari.

Vettel was then pushing to try and improve his time still further on the final lap of the session before coming across a yellow flag at the final corner when Kamui Kobayashi got out of shape under braking and went off into the run-off zone on pit entrance.

Behind Alonso, his Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa was third fastest with Mark Webber fourth in the second of the Red Bulls. The top four were covered by a second, with Jenson Button's McLaren the best of the rest in fifth.

Nico Rosberg was sixth fastest for Mercedes ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher – the latter having suffered a spin during the session while trying to improve on his best time.

Renault pair Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld then completed the top ten.

Towards the rear of the field, Lotus again had the edge over its rivals in the battle of the newcomers with Heikki Kovalainen quickest in 19th place. Tonio Liuzzi meanwhile managed to again outpace the Virgin of Jerome D'Ambrosio.
