Williams adds to technical team

28 June 2011

Williams has moved to strengthen its technical team after announcing the appointment of Jason Somerville and Mark Gillan to the roles of head of aerodynamics and chief operations engineer.

Somerville, who will start work at the Williams factory in Grove on 15 August, started his F1 career with Williams back in 1999 and moved up to the position of joint-head of the aerodynamics department before moving to Toyota. Following Toyota's withdrawal from the sport, he then joined Renault and played a part in the development of the R31.

Gillan meanwhile, who started his career with McLaren before moving on to Jaguar, Red Bull Racing and Toyota, will make a full-time return to the sport having worked at the University of Surrey as Professor of Vehicle Engineering while also consulting on aerodynamics with a leading Formula One team since his departure from Toyota.

Gillan will join the team on 1 October.

“Williams F1 is looking forward to welcoming Jason and Mark to the team,” team principal Sir Frank Williams said. “They bring with them talent, experience and good team skills. We now feel that, together with Mike Coughlan, Jason and Mark can form the right technical leadership to take the team forward as we work our way back to the front of the grid.”

The announcement of the new additions to the backroom comes after Williams brought Coughlan back into the sport, with Sam Michael and Jon Tomlinson both announcing they will leave the team at the end of the season.
