Mark Webber was fastest in opening practice this morning for this weekend's F1 2011 British Grand Prix - although with conditions drying towards the end the times were pretty academic.
Webber posted the quickest time, a 1 minute 46.603 seconds, near the end of the 90 minute session, which was blighted by rain showers, especially frustrating for the teams as they look to adapt to new FIA rules banning off-throttle blown diffusers. Webber managed 19 tours in total, stopping out on track late on for undisclosed reasons.
Michael Schumacher meanwhile was 'best of the rest' for Mercedes, 0.660 seconds slower, while Rubens Barrichello, Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa complete a rather unusual top five, late runs bumping them all up the order, although the latter was still nearly a second off the ultimate pace.
Further back Nico Rosberg took sixth ahead of Fernando Alonso, who had been quickest in his Ferrari heading into the final third of the session.
Lewis Hamilton was the best of the Brits, albeit only eighth in his McLaren, with Paul di Resta eleventh for Force India and Jenson Button 15th in the sister McLaren MP4-26.
Nico Hulkenberg, driving Adrian Sutil's Force India, and Jaime Alguersuari rounded out the top ten, while after di Resta in P11, came Sebastien Buemi, current runaway championship leader, Sebastian Vettel and Pastor Maldonado.
Lotus Renault GP duo Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov were 16th and 17th, with Kamui Kobayashi 18th. Kobayashi crashed out heavily with about 20 minutes to go when he lost it at the final corner and went off into the barriers. The Sauber man was lucky not to roll his car, which suffered heavy damage to the front and rear suspension.
At the rear Jarno Trulli was the best of the 'newer' teams, followed by team-mate Karun Chandhok, who was running in Heikki Kovalainen's Team Lotus. Timo Glock, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Jerome d'Ambrosio and newbie Daniel Ricciardo brought up the rear in Virgin-Hispania-Virgin-Hispania formation.
