Team Lotus will run KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) in 2012 supplied by its technology partner Red Bull, Tony Fernandes has confirmed.

Lotus is estimated to be missing out on a fair degree of performance this season due to not having KERS on its Renault-powered T128 - with only fellow backmarkers Virgin Racing and Hispania Racing (HRT) similarly without the energy-saving device.

However, the Anglo/Malaysian outfit is already using the hydraulics system and gearbox that featured in last year's title-winning Red Bull Racing RB6 - and in 2012, is set to benefit from the same parts as are presently on its successor, Adrian Newey's hitherto dominant RB7.

To that, reports Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, will be added KERS, developed by both Red Bull and Renault in conjunction with Italian specialists Magneti Marelli - an agreement corroborated by Lotus team principal Fernandes.

RBR has struggled with its KERS system in F1 2011 to-date, with the technology proving to be arguably the RB7's sole real weakness and Newey conceding that energy recovery is 'not really our fort?...we are an aerodynamics and, sort of, chassis composite engineering group rather than a KERS group'.
