Liuzzi hints at new HRT deal

Tonio Liuzzi hints that a second year with HRT could be an option for the 2012 F1 season
Tonio Liuzzi has hinted that he could remain with the HRT team for a second season in 2012, although it will be later this year before his future is decided.

The Italian was set to race for Force India this season before being ousted from his drive in order to allow the Silverstone-based team to promote Paul di Resta into a race seat.

With limited options available elsewhere on the grid, Liuzzi switched to second year team HRT and has a best finish so far of 13th place in the rain-affected Canadian Grand Prix.

With the team now under new ownership after being purchased by the Thesan Capital group, Liuzzi said he was excited about the future may hold for the Spanish outfit and hinted that he could remain for a second year if a deal can be agreed.

“I was asked recently whether I am firming up my plans for next year yet, and for sure there have been a few talks but it is a bit too early to say anything at the moment,” he told ESPN. “People have come to chat with me, but everything is good with HRT and they are happy with me, so at the moment I would say everything is normal.

“HRT's programme seems really interesting for the future and within the next two or three races we should know a little bit more about next year.”

I query why a good and experienced driver like Luizzi would want to stay at HRT other than to develop a reputation as being a back-marker. There must be good opportunities for him in other motor racing franchises. It is different for young drivers like Ricciardo, who has a real chance of getting into a competitive car in the future, and who is after getting more experience of the racing tempo and peculiarities of F1.
