Fernando Alonso has been backed as the most impressive performance on the 2011 F1 grid, despite the fact that the Spaniard sits 89 points behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel.
While the defending champion has taken no fewer than six wins for Red Bull, Alonso has taken to the top step of the podium only once at Silverstone, although he is currently one of the form men in the field with five top three finishes in the past six races.
However, HRT driver Tonio Liuzzi insists it is Alonso's performances for Ferrari
that have been the most impressive this season even if Vettel would appear to almost have the championship tied up having extended his championship lead in last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.
“Looking at the championship as a whole, I think we will continue to see McLaren
give Red Bull
a hard time after the summer break,” the Italian wrote in his ESPN
column. “Having said that, the amount of points Sebastian Vettel
has is massive and to be honest I think this year's championship is more or less decided already.
“But although Vettel is leading the championship, I think Fernando Alonso
has been the most impressive of the top five or six drivers this year. He is doing an amazing job with the Ferrari, has had some great races and has made very few mistakes considering how hard he has pushed. He's always making the difference and for sure we will see some great races before the end of the season between the drivers at the top teams. “
