Pirelli keen to end quali tyre saving 'trick'

Tyre rules set to be amended for 2012 to ensure more action in qualifying?

Pirelli boss Paul Hembery has admitted the rules may need to change next season to stop drivers' from restricting their runs in qualifying in order to preserve fresh tyres for the race.

“It true we need to stop that little trick,” Hembery confirmed in an interview with Spanish sports newspaper, AS, this week.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone added that while Pirelli has done an 'incredible job' this year, what happens in qualifying is now a concern.

“The solution for that is very simple [though]. We need to provide more sets of tyres to the drivers,” Ecclestone added in a separate report in Italy 'paper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Meanwhile Hembery has confirmed on Twitter that qualifying tyres could be one way to get around the issue, noting that quali tyres could be worth up to 2 seconds a lap compared to the current super softs.

“[We are having] many discussions [including a qualifying tyre and increasing the number of tyres available from 11 to 13]. [But in the end] teams decide, not us,” Hembery stated when asked about the issue.

@ AJ, unless you will force them to use new tyres in Q3, what will stop them from doing a lap with old/already used tyres just to do a lap and avoid your suggested 5 place gris penalty ? I am not a fan of driving for endurance. I like racing. Rubbish rules like compulsory use of the same set of tyres for 2 stages started the demise of the WRC. I dont want to see a driver holding back because he wants his tyres to last. What next ? Smaller fuel tanks, then have them drive to make that last too ? No thanks. I prefer racing. Take the man and machine to their limits every lap. Otherwise they could just get the sissies who buy Toyota Priuses and let them have at it on track.

Nah, they don't need more tyres, they need less tyres. Give them a fixed number of tyre sets for the whole of practice, qualifying and race. Make it a requirement that you must participate in each quali session, or you take a five place grid drop. We'll soon see who the best drivers are. If the likes of Perez and Button can make their tyres last longer, then other drivers would have to change their style to get the best out of the tyres during the race. If you run out of tyres or run out of grip, then you need to work on your strategy, don't you!
