Maldonado penalised

Pastor Maldonado hit with grid penalty, while Lewis Hamilton gets a reprimand following their clash at the end of Q2.

Pastor Maldonado has been given a five-place grid penalty following the incident with Lewis Hamilton at the end of Q2 today in Belgium.

Hamilton and Maldonado had their little spat at the end of Q2, when the Williams man appeared to swerve into his rival as they exited La Source on the slowing down lap. Moments earlier the two had banged wheels at the Bus Stop, when Hamilton squeezed by on his final flying lap.

Hamilton subsequently said it was 'fortunate that neither of us flipped it or had a big, big crash', while Maldonado said it was a 'difficult moment' and he 'didn't know what really happened' [see separate story - click here].

The stewards judged though that both drivers were guilty of having caused a collision and were 'involved in an incident as defined by Article 16.1 of the 2011 FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations'.

Consequently Hamilton himself got a reprimand, but he keeps second place on the grid.

The penalties reflect the amount of blame. Sure Hamilton twitched in his direction...but that hardly caused the crash. Maldonado had all the room in the world so there was really no reason he should have been anywhere near Hamilton. Especially as the flag had already dropped. There was no reason for it at all and that is why he has a five place penalty.
