Senna says sorry, adds 'foundations' are there

Bruno Senna: Obviously I would like to have finished higher, considering my grid position, but I've now got a good pace to build on and take me through to Monza, which is another of my favourite tracks.

Bruno Senna has apologised to Jaime Alguersuari after taking the Spaniard out at the start of the Belgian GP.

Senna, who was taking in his first race of the season, after being drafted by in Lotus Renault to replace Nick Heidfeld, overcooked it on the run down to the first corner and that incident compromised his whole afternoon.

Given he had done so well in qualifying and secured seventh on the grid, it was a bitter blow for the Brazilian, but while he only finished 13th, he did still take comfort from his race pace and is confident the 'foundations' are there.

“Unfortunately I made a mistake in the first corner, which cost me the chance of really causing a stir at the top end for the remainder of the race. So, firstly I would like to say sorry to Jaime for that,” Senna said.

“I made a mistake in the braking area, so that meant I slipped back and couldn't compete where I wanted to; this left me quite lonely at the back for a while!

“However, once I'd paid the price with the drive through penalty I was able to start making some progress and my race pace was actually quite strong, so I kept pushing and was pleased with how I drove from then on.

“Obviously I would like to have finished higher, considering my grid position, but I've now got a good pace to build on and take me through to Monza, which is another of my favourite tracks. We'll sit down and learn where we can improve but the foundations are there.”

Lotus Renault chief race engineer, Alan Permane meanwhile was disappointed with what happened at the start, but still felt Senna had put in a reasonable performance over the weekend as a whole.

“Bruno slipped up on his first corner, and this damaged his first set of tyres which set the scene for the rest of his race,” he added.

“Looking over his weekend though, he did a fantastic job yesterday and it was always going to be a very difficult indoctrination racing on these tyres in dry conditions for the first time at this circuit.”

give the boy a chance dropped in half way through the season no real dry running in practice starting quite high up the grid and wanting to impress. That is alot of pressure. you cants judge him on last year there isnt a driver on the grid that could have done anything with that car as a rookie.

Not sure what he did was as big a disaster as some think. Frankly he was lucky to get that high on the grid and it was in large part based on a semi-wet track. For the race he was unlikely to get any points it would have been iffy even if there was no first lap incident. It does however give him a little boost in the next race as other drivers will remember that he is a rookie and give him a bit more space.... It also points out the huge problem with a test ban. You will continue to have new drivers **** up like this as they have no idea how the car will actually handle until they get in the race weekend.
