Button eager to stay at McLaren

Jenson Button: All Martin [Whitmarsh] has got to do is say 'yes' and I will say 'yes' because I want to be here next year.
Jenson Button has said he definitely wants to stay with McLaren next season and that it is just a case of team boss Martin Whitmarsh taking up the option on his services for 2012.

Button's current deal includes an option for next year, but it is understood that McLaren are eager to tie him to a more long term agreement [see separate story - click here], not surprisingly really, given his performances and the way he has settled in at the Woking-based outfit since joining after winning the F1 drivers' title with Brawn in 2009.

Indeed after storming back to take a place on the rostrum in Belgium last weekend - despite only qualifying 13th after a 'miscommunication' in Q2 and despite getting caught up in all the mayhem at the first corner, he has now moved up to fourth and ahead of team-mate, Lewis Hamilton in the F1 2011 drivers' championship. Thus far this season he scored 149 points, taking two wins - in Canada and Hungary - and a further four podiums.

“All Martin [Whitmarsh] has got to do is say 'yes' and I will say 'yes' because I want to be here next year,” Button told British newspaper The Telegraph. “I want to fight for the championship. I am more confident now, more than I've ever been here. I really like the car and the direction we've taken. It's up to the team as to when they approach me, but for me, I'm the happiest I've been with the car.”

Crash.net understands that an announcement from McLaren should be forthcoming soon.

McLaren would have to be as mad as a box of frogs not to re-sign Button, I would say his stock is higher now that it was when he won the championship, plenty of silly people claimed that was all down to the car. If everyone is honest (hard for some I know) there is no doubt that Button has driven better, raced better, represented McLaren better and represented F1 better than Hamilton this year and he gets paid less, so a new contract should be a no brainer.
