Hispania Racing (HRT) team principal Dr. Colin Kolles has paid tribute to his former driver Christian Bakkerud, describing him as 'an amazing person' and 'the nicest driver you could meet'.
Bakkerud sadly passed away following a road car accident in Wimbledon last weekend that had left him with brain injuries, and many in the motor racing world have been paying their respects to the erstwhile GP2, DTM, sportscar and British F3 star [see separate story – click here
After switching from single-seaters to tin-tops, the popular Dane competed for Kolles' Audi outfit in the DTM in 2009 and the Le Mans 24 Hours both that season and the next, tallying a best finish of ninth overall in the round-the-clock French classic at his first attempt.
“He was an amazing person – very polite, very nice, very helpful,” Kolles told SPEED.com
. “He was a family friend, the nicest driver you could meet. All his team-mates are completely shocked, because they really liked him.”
Bakkerud had retired from the sport midway through 2010 due to recurrent back injuries, and had since gone on to work for a global shipping company. He was just 26 when he died.
