Vettel top in Singapore FP2

Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel leads the way in FP2 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton.

Sebastian Vettel was fastest in second practice for this weekend's F1 2011 Singapore Grand Prix.

Vettel, who was quickest throughout much of the session in his Red Bull RB7, posted the best time of the day, a 1 minute 46.374 seconds, with around 30 minutes to go. That left the German two tenths up on his closest rival.

Fernando Alonso meanwhile headed the chasing pack for Ferrari, the only other man in the 1m 46s bracket, while McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who had been quickest in the shortened first practice, had to be content with third - half a second slower on a 1m 47.115s.

Next up was Felipe Massa, just five thousandths off Hamilton in the second Ferrari, closely followed by Red Bull Racing's Mark Webber. Michael Schumacher completed the top six for Mercedes, albeit 1.2 seconds off P5 and 2 seconds off the ultimate pace.

Force India's Adrian Sutil had another strong run and took seventh, with the Sauber's of Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi eighth and ninth and Jenson Button tenth. Button stopped around 40 minutes in, seemingly locking up at turn 14. Although he avoided the barriers in his McLaren, he was unable to select reverse and thus took no further part in the session. In total he did just 10 tours.

Jaime Alguersuari was just outside the top ten in his Toro Rosso, despite having to stop early due to mechanical problems. Then came the Renault's of Bruno Senna and Vitaly Petrov in twelfth and fourteenth, sandwiching Paul di Resta. Di Resta had a troubled FP2 with hydraulic issues and although he got out near the end, it meant he was limited to 8 laps in his Force India.

Nico Rosberg and the Williams' of Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado held positions 15 through to 17, with Heikki Kovalainen 18th and best of the 'newer' teams for Lotus.

Sebastien Buemi ended up 19th and out of position after hitting the wall at turn 21 with around 35 minutes to go. The Toro Rosso man ripped off his right front wheel in the incident bringing out the yellow flags.

At the back, Jarno Trulli was 20th in the second Team Lotus car, with the Virgins and the HRTs bringing up the rear as normal. Vitantonio Liuzzi was slowest of that quartet, four tenths of his team-mate, Daniel Ricciardo, although he did miss FP1, as Narain Karthikeyan used his car in the opening session.

mmm . . . ferrari and jenson button feel that the ability to manage the longevity of the tyres will be crucial for the race, more so than normal due to the heat and humidity. added to the melting pot, massa said the time difference between the two compounds was larger than hoped for (ferrari), not sure if rb are admitting to any weaknes yet. one of the reporters from pitpass spotted vettel leaving the circuit at 5am, long after most teams, journalists and even schumacher had left!
