Sauber struggle in intermediate conditions

Sauber now face a frantic FP3 session in order to find an ideal dry balance after today's wet running disrupted their practice programme.
Sauber duo Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez endured an uneasy Friday practice ahead of Sunday's Korean Grand Prix after a rain disrupted morning cost the team vital dry running on their updated aero package from Suzuka.

Both Kobayashi and Perez complained of a lack of grip on the rain soaked circuit compounded with the fact that the track is barely used prior to the Grand Prix weekend.

The Sauber pair both achieved top ten position's in FP1 with Kobayashi posting a time good enough for sixth while Perez ended ninth a further 1.2 seconds off his team mate. Perez however got the better of his team mate in FP2 finishing up in 16th while Kobayashi struggled on the intermediate tyre in 17th.

Perez, however, wasn't happy with how his Friday unfolded.

“It is a shame but there wasn't much more we could have done today," he said. "There was just too much rain, and I didn't do a single lap on dry tyres. For me it wasn't an ideal Friday at all, as I don't know the circuit. Now tomorrow I won't have much time to get the balance of the car right."

Kobayashi also struggled to find any positives from today's running.

“There was no grip at all," he said. "The track itself has a very low grip level, and on top of that our car doesn't make very good use of the intermediate tyres.

"In general I don't mind driving in the rain, and with the full wet tyres it was no problem, but later with the intermediate tyres I was struggling a lot. It seems to take a long time for this circuit to dry out. In any case, I hope we will have dry conditions tomorrow."

Sauber's Head of Track Engineering, Giampaolo Dall'Ara expects the remainder of the weekend to be a lot drier which will enable the team to continue with their programme.

“As the forecast predicted, it was a rainy day," he said. "However, for the remainder of the weekend we expect dry conditions, so we just did some running to do some checks on the car. We know we will have a very full programme tomorrow to do all the work necessary to find a good dry set-up.”
