There was no other way of looking at it: 15th and 16th place for Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez at the end of the Korean Grand Prix was a very disappointing result for the Sauber F1 team, an organisation that has been more accustomed to fighting the big teams at the sharp end of the grid than to seeing both their drivers get beaten by a Lotus car.

The team's technical director, James Kay, said that the team had been hard at work since Yeongam to work out just why their form was so poor in Korea - and believes that he has the answer.

"Our performance in Korea was clearly below our own expectations," he admitted. "We analysed all the data carefully and came to the conclusion that we underestimated the limitation on the front axle and front tyres.

"As a result we suffered from too much understeer, which resulted in over loading the front tyres," he added.

Kay didn't think that this would be a problem at India, adding that the team will have some small modifications to the rear wings and some small updates on the front wing for the coming weekend.

Instead, there would be a whole new set of challenges for the team and the drivers to get on top of: "Like Korea last year, at a brand new track we expect that things like the evolution of grip will be quite significant over the weekend," he said. "This will influence the balance of the car, and you will possibly have to change the downforce level."

Kay pointed to the single long straight combined with the need for high downforce in the winding part of the track and said that it was "not unlike other new circuits."

Tyre selection could also prove crucial to Sauber's performance at Buddh International Circuit. "We will have the soft and the hard tyre compound," Kay said. "A lot depends on track temperatures, but given the nature of the track with several highly loaded corners, it could be that the hard tyre will warm up okay and last.

"Maybe the soft will struggle, but you never really know until you're there," he added.
