Schumacher, Petrov fall in Q2

29 October 2011

Michael Schumacher and Vitaly Petrov were the two main casualties of the second phase of qualifying for the Indian Grand Prix, allowing Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari to progress to the pole position shoot-out.

Schumacher complained of a vibration on his final set of tyres which, although allowing him to improve his time, failed to improve on the twelfth position which he held at the start. Petrov, meanwhile, yo-yo'd between the top ten and the drop zone, before finally being relegated to the latter when Adrian Sutil improved to eighth fastest. The pair preliminarily line up on row six for the inaugural F1 race at the Buddh International Circuit - Petrov has a penalty to serve for colliding with Schumacher in Korea - ahead of Paul di Resta, Pastor Maldonado, Bruno Senna, Rubens Barrichello and Sergio Perez who, despite progressing to Q2, will only line up one slot ahead of Sauber team-mate Kamui Kobayashi.

Sebastian Vettel led the way at the top of the times, the only driver to dip into the 1min 24secs bracket, and will be joined in the battle - if it can be called that - for pole by Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, the Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, Mercedes' Nico Rosberg, Sutil and the Toro Rosso pairing of Alguersuari and Buemi.
