D’Ambrosio: Pic has more backing than me

Jerome D'Ambrosio counts the cost of lacking the backing to keep his Marussia Virgin drive
Jerome D'Ambrosio has admitted that he lost his F1 drive with the Marussia Virgin team due to a lack of financial support after the team signed Charles Pic for 2012.

D'Ambrosio enjoyed a solid debut season with the team in 2011, finishing ahead of more experienced team-mate Timo Glock on a number of occasions, but still finds himself without a drive for the new campaign after the team confirmed the signing of Pic shortly after the season finale in Brazil.

Speaking on Belgian TV channel Sporza, D'Ambrosio admitted that finances had been behind him losing his role after just one season, with discussions ongoing about options elsewhere on the grid.

Lotus are widely seen as the most likely destination in a testing role, with team boss Eric Boullier also being D'Ambrosio's manager.

“I don't know why I lost my seat," he said. "I think Charles' total package was better than mine. You need strong sponsors from your own country; Charles Pic has France, [Pastor] Maldonado has Venezuela and I have Belgium.

"The interest in Belgium is in the right direction, but it's still not enough to stay in Formula One."
