Buemi shocked at Toro Rosso call

Sebastien Buemi shocked to lose his drive with Toro Rosso for the 2012 F1 season
Sebastien Buemi admits he was shocked to receive the news that he has lost his drive with Toro Rosso – having reportedly missed the call informing him of the decision as he was in the Red Bull simulator at the time.

Earlier this week, Buemi said he was confident of retaining his drive with the team [See separate story HERE] only for the announcement to then be made that both the Swiss driver and team-mate Jaime Alguersuari were being dropped in favour of Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo.

The news came as a particular shock to Buemi, with the newspaper Le Matin reporting that he missed calls from both team boss Franz Tost and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko as he was driving the Catalunya circuit in the Red Bull simulator and visiting the Toro Rosso wind tunnel in the UK at the time.

“I was shocked,” he said. “I had been told a decision would be made before the end of the year, but I was under the impression that my contract would be extended. I was not expecting it at all.”

Speaking to Blick, Buemi added that his options for the 2012 season were now extremely limited with only Williams and HRT likely to have vacancies for next year.

“I have to accept it even if it is very hard to understand,” he said. “Maybe there are options, but it's still too early to say anything. Fortunately in the past years I have built up many contacts with most of the teams. So this pays off now.”

Only thing inherently wrong about this decision is it's timing. STR could have let Buemi know his time was up after three years months ago when he (and Algy) still had time to try and arrange something for next year. Now they're pretty much resigned to LMS or something like that.

A harsh decision but a necessary one!! Buemi and jaime were 3 years in the team and did nothing special! Daniel whereas beat liuzzi in 3 to 4 years! Great driver selection by toro rosso!
