Top ten F1 Drivers of the Year: 8th

He may have been in a 'division three' outfit at Team Lotus, but Heikki Kovalainen often surpassed expectation, making Q2 some blistering starts to put the green machine higher up the order than its performance warranted. Because of that, he is a deserving eighth in your F1 Driver of the Year poll

Heikki Kovalainen may have finished behind Team Lotus team-mate Jarno Trulli in the 2011 drivers' championship, but only because the Italian had two 13th places to his one.

On the whole, the Finn was 'the man' at Lotus, winning the qualifying battle 16-2 and generally being the faster of the two on raceday too. He regularly impressed with some strong starts that had him punching above the T128's weight, but also made it out of Q1 when the opportunity arose. Although the car was generally pushed back down the order, Kovalainen recorded a best result of 13th at Monza and also had a brace of 14ths from Monaco and India.

Despite having resurrected the reputation he forged in GP2 with two strong seasons at Team Lotus, Kovalainen has already pledged his immediate future to the ambitious squad, which will be rebranded as Caterham F1 in 202, but it is clear that bigger fish may again be eyeing his talents.
