After a disappointing first year back from retirement in 2010, Michael Schumacher knew he had to raise his game in 2011 – and doing so helped the 42-year old to sixth in your F1 Driver of the Year poll

If Michael Schumacher can take anything away from 2011, it is that it was a better campaign than his return in 2010.

The seven-time champion was more of a factor for longer, even though he continued to miss the podium in a car that was no match for McLaren, Ferrari or Red Bull. A slow start to the campaign again raised doubts about the wisdom of his comeback, but Schumacher turned his year around after his home race with a string of top six results that helped close the points gap to team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Ironically, his best finish was one better than his countryman's, with fourth place in the rain in Canada – when he looked set to return to the podium for the first time since finishing his first stint in the top flight four years previously, only for Mark Webber to depose him in the closing stages.

There were still too many incidents with other drivers, Vitaly Petrov in particular, and the veteran was again out-gunned by Rosberg in qualifying, by a score of 16-3, but he'll be back for more in 2012, hoping Mercedes can get its act together.

Much better year from Schui, he seemed more comfortable - was beginning to understand the tyres and his race strategies were reminisant of his Ferrari days. He was never a fantastic qualifier anyway so I doubt the qualifying performance is a major issue, if he is at least on par with Rosberg there (i.e 1 place behind on the grid) then I think his race-craft will be better too, ultimately he made the most passes this year with some fantastic starts - Spa, 24-5th was probably his best drive of the season! Compared to other comebacks, his has at least not been a total failure and hopefully 2012 will see him beeting Rosberg and stop making those clumsey mistakes! Instead, more strategic cleverness, more racecraft and more of those moves that made schuy what he is known for, pushing to the limit of just about everything!

So all the facts say that Nico is better than Schumacher do they Jose? Try some of these then. Merc's best finish of the season? Schumacher's 4th at Canada. So he got that pup closer to the podium than Nico managed. Schumacher had 3 mechanical breakdowns Nico had none, that more than covers the paltry 13 points between them at the end. Nico qualified ahead 15 times but finished behind him 6 times, so who's the better racer? Schumacher made 116 overtakes this season, more than any other driver. And you think he's past it and should quit! lol
