Heikki Kovalainen says continued progress is key to his longer-term future with the Caterham F1 team, admitting that further steps forward are needed to ensure he stays for 2013.
The Finn has gone some way towards rebuilding his career after a tough spell at McLaren during two seasons with the team – running under the Lotus banner – and was linked with a move elsewhere for next year as a result of his performances during 2011.
Having confirmed he will honour his contract with Caterham and continue with the team in 2012, Kovalainen will now hope to continue the progress made over the past twelve months when the new season gets underway in Australia and he admitted that the performance next year will play a major role in deciding is he remains with the team into 2013.
"I want to see what we can do together and let's see what is the situation in the summer," he told Turan Sanomat
. "It depends on the car's performance," said Kovalainen. "I cannot give an exact percentage but if we continue to develop next season then the chance is high.
"If we do not continue to develop, then the chance is small."
