Schumacher: We only need a ‘small step’

Michael Schumacher says Mercedes needs to take a 'small step' to be able to challenge in F1 2012
Michael Schumacher says he feels Mercedes is only a 'small step' away from being in a position to challenge towards the front of the F1 field.

The Brackley-based team has failed to challenge Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari for race victories during the past two seasons, with Schumacher unable to make it onto the podium since coming out of retirement at the start of the 2010 campaign.

However, Mercedes has spent recent months strengthening its backroom staff in order to try and make forward progress and with Schumacher admitting he is now more at home within the team, the seven-time champion said he felt the hard work back at base would soon be rewarded.

“I know the team a lot better now and I am much more involved,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport, “at first I was a little bit rusty. Things are much better and I am convinced that Mercedes and I can be successful.

“We just need another small step and then we can make it to the top.”

I really hope that Michael will get on the podium this year. He is still super fit and has the same fighting spirit that made him 7 times WDC. I am sure he is bringing tremendous knowledge and experience to the team and hope that can transfer into winning races.

MSC is one of the few drivers that can really develop a car, watched him at Ferrari and as they improved he called the shots, "2we'll be in the top ten", few races later "we'll be in the top three".Then, "we have a chance of a win", and they did. yep, love him or hate him he is an engineer's dream driver, his feedback is better than onboard computers. My money is on him to win a few races this year, if not the championship. You know, I think I'll put 20 quid on him tomorrow. If I win I'll buy a ticket for Spa to watch the best driver ever on the best track ever.
